Adjusting TropeTrainer Mobile Settings

To display the Settings window, tap "Settings" from the Home view, "Reading options" from the Reading List view, or "Display options" or "Audio options" from the Display Reading view. The Settings window is displayed:

The Settings window has four sections: Display, Audio, Calendar and Reading List, and Melody settings.

There are four buttons in a black tab bar at the bottom of the Settings window.

When the Settings window is opened from the Home view, All settings are displayed.

When the Settings window is opened from the Reading List view, the Reading List/Calendar settings are displayed.

When the Settings window is opened from the Display Reading view Display options button, the Display settings are shown.

When the Settings window is opened from the Display Reading view Audio options button, the Audio and Melody settings are shown.

To see settings that are not currently visible, tap "All settings" or tap the tab button for the type of setting you want to adjust.

Display Settings

Display settings let you adjust how readings appear in the Display Reading view.

To turn on color-coded highlights for trope groups, slide the switch next to "Show Trope Group color background" to ON.

To show an English translation next to the Chumash or STaM (single column) Hebrew text views, slide the switch next to "Show English translation" to ON.

To show the Hebrew text in STaM letters without vowels or tropes, such as is seen in Torah and Megillah scrolls, tap the "STaM (Torah script)" button so that it turns dark and is selected.

To show the Hebrew text in printed-book-style letters with vowels and tropes, such as is seen in a Chumash, tap the "Vowels and Tropes" button so that it turns dark and is selected.

To show the Hebrew text in STaM letters in one column, and with vowels and tropes in the other, tap the "STaM | Tropes" (middle) button so that it turns dark and is selected.

When you are finished making changes to settings in this and any other sections, tap at the top of the Settings window to return to where you were working. The settings you changed will be applied to any readings or lists that are currently open.

Audio Settings

To adjust the chanting speed, drag the Speed slider left towards the far left to 0 (very slow) or towards the far right to 12 (rather fast).

To adjust the pitch of the chanting, drag the Pitch slider left to lower the pitch or right to raise it. The pitch can be adjusted up and down 12 tones in semi-tone intervals. 0 is no change.

To adjust the voice of the chanting, tap the button to the right of the label "Voice:". A picker wheel opens showing the Voice options:

Swipe the pickerwheel up or down until the voice you want is under the grey bar (e.g. Baritone is selected above), then tap the "Use" button. To keep the selection from before the picker wheel was opened, tap Cancel. The selection you made is displayed in the Voice button.

Note: The Voice you select changes the "center" of the pitch selection. For example, Bass voice with pitch 0 is four tones lower than Baritone voice with pitch 0.

To adjust the Pronunciation of the chanting tap the button to the right of the label "Pronunciation:". A picker wheel opens showing the Pronunciation (accent) options:

Select the pronunciation you want and tap Use. To keep the selection from before the picker wheel was opened, tap Cancel. The selection you made is displayed in the Pronunciation button.

Technical note regarding pronunciations:

When you are finished making changes to settings in this and any other sections, tap at the top of the Settings window to return to where you were working. The settings you changed will be applied to any readings or lists that are currently open.

Calendar and Reading List settings

To set TropeTrainer Mobile to use Calendar and Reading settings appropriate for those who live in Israel (and most Reform congregations who observe one-day holidays), slide the switch next to "Use Israeli Resident Calendar options" to ON.

Some Conservative synagogues use a "Triennial" Torah reading cycle, in which only a third of any reading is read on each Shabbat. "Complete reading" means the entire Shabbat reading. TropeTrainer Mobile uses the Triennial Cycle developed by the Rabbinical Assembly, and used with their kind permission.

To set TropeTrainer Mobile to a particular Triennial year, tap the button next to the label "Use Complete or Triennial cycle". A picker wheel opens letting you select between

In congregations where a Triennial cycle reading is read, during year 1 and 2 one can either read the maftir reading (Torah reading before reading the Haftarah) from the end of the Triennial reading (this is the recommended option by the Rabbinical Assembly), or the standard maftir reading from the end of the Complete reading. To use the Triennial Maftir, slide the switch next to the label "Use Triennial Maftir" to ON.

When you are finished making changes to settings in this and any other sections, tap at the top of the Settings window to return to where you were working. The settings you changed will be applied to any readings or lists that are currently open.

Melody Settings

The melody choices for Torah readings on Shabbat and on High Holidays, Haftarah and Megillah readings, and their respective blessings are all set separately.

To set a melody, tap the button to the right of the label describing the type of reading or blessing you want. A picker wheel appears. Swipe the wheel so that the melody you want is behind the grey bar, then tap "Use", or tap "Cancel" to keep your current setting for that melody.

Note: Be careful to adjust the correct melody type. If you are viewing and listening to Haftarah readings, be sure the melody you are changing is "Haftarah melody".

When you are finished making changes to settings in this and any other sections, tap at the top of the Settings window to return to where you were working. The settings you changed will be applied to any readings or lists that are currently open.
